To avoid forcing others into an instant defence reaction when having to make critical remarks, start with an appreciative statement. Explain that under the circumstances (pressing deadlines, weather, space limitations, unclear drawings, delivery problems) everybody could have made this mistake. Tell the criticized person that all in all you are satisfied with her/his work and that you are generally confident in her/his capabilities.
